Tell us about your journey. Born in Mozambique, childhood in Lisbon , living in London. How those experiences shaped your art?
I was born in Mozambique during an interesting time, my country had gained its independence, therefore it should have been a time of celebration, peace, hard work & rebuilding the country with a new vision but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Instead 2 political parties ( Renamo & Frelimo) were fighting for power & this led to a war that lasted 15 yrs. Due to this war, me & my family had to flee Mozambique & moved to Lisbon.
Growing up in Lisbon in the 80s was a difficult time for a young black Male, there was a lot of racism from different systems in society, from the educational system which had teachers openly claiming that Africans were only 3 quarters human beings to the employment system which would completely block an african from raising to managerial positions regardless of his/ her credentials. The struggles of being surrounded by poverty, racial inequality & police brutality led me to start writing poetry which eventually turned into rap music
Cuéntanos sobre tu viaje. Nacido en Mozambique, infancia en Lisboa, residiendo en Londres. Como es que esas experiencias han moldeado tu producción artística?
Nací en Mozambique durante un periodo interesante en el cual mi país ganó su independencia en el cual estábamos supuestos a entrar en un periodo de celebración, paz, trabajo duro y reconstrucción del país bajo una nueva visión, pero desafortunadamente no fue el caso. Por el contrario, la lucha por el poder entre dos partidos políticos (Renamo y Frelimo) nos llevo a una guerra que duró 15 años. Debido a esta guerra , mi familia y yo tuvimos que huir de Mozambique para reubicarnos en Lisboa.
Crecer en Lisboa durante los 80’s era difícil para un hombre Negro joven, demasiado racismo a través de diferentes procesos en la sociedad, desde el sistema educativo en el que abiertamente se asentaba que los africanos éramos 3/4 de seres humanos hasta el sistema de empleo en el que había un bloqueo deliberado para los africanos el cual impedía el acceso a posiciones gerenciales sin importar su capacidad o preparación.
La lucha de haber crecido rodeado de pobreza, inequidad racial y brutalidad policiaca me empujaron a escribir poesía, lo cual eventualmente se convirtió en rap.
From Blind Alphabetz , to Native Sun, what is behind this creative progression ?
My parents played a very significant role in my artistry, my father was a singer back in Mozambique & growing up my mother regularly played music in our household which was a way for me to keep connected to my history & traditions.
In terms of my creative progression I was part of various hip hop groups even before Blind Alphabetz.
Blind Alphabetz was actually born from another group that both myself & Iron Braydz were part of called Geneva Convention musically we were both heavily influenced by groups such as Wu Tang Clan & Dead Prez.

When we first started Blind Alphabetz we had a hard hitting militant politicized sound full of testosterone but as time progressed we also grew up musically & our sound because more soulful lyrically we became more mature, more reflective and more personal in our topics.
I then joined Sarina Leah & together we created Native Sun. From the very beginning I always envisioned a duo that reflected strong African inspired sounds blended with Hip Hop. I wanted our music to be empowering, educational & uplifting whilst maintains a strong identity.
De Blind Alphabetz a Native Sun, que hay tetras de la progresión creativa?
Mis padres jugaron un rol significativo en mi experiencia artística. Mi padre fue cantante en Mozambique y crecí en un hogar en el que mi madre constantemente tocaba música para mantenerme conectado con mis tradiciones e historia. En términos de mi progresión creativa fui parte de varios grupos de Hip Hop incluso antes de Blind Alphabetz.
Blind Alpahbetz surgió como consecuencia de otro grupo previo llamado “Geneva Convention” junto a Iron Braydz en el cual nuestra influencia primordial era el sonido de grupos como Wu-Tang Clan y Dead Prez. Cuando recién empezamos Blind Alphabetz teníamos sonido que pegaba duro y era bastante politizado, lleno de testosterona, pero con el paso del tiempo también crecimos musicalmente y nuestro sonido se volvió mas soulful, nuestras letras maduraron, mucho mas personales y en retrospectiva. Después conecté con Sarina Leah y juntos creamos Native Sun. Desde el inicio lo conceptualizamos como un duo que refleja fuertemente sonidos inspirados por Africa fusionados con Hip Hop. Quería hacer música que empoderara, educara y alentara manteniendo nuestra identidad sólida.
As a Black Muslim man in London, what’s your opinion on the Black Lives Matter movement and how important is this historical moment for an artist like you?

I think the Black Lives Matter movement is really significant but at the same time the need for its existence sadly highlights the state that black & brown people are still in even in 2016.
As a Black Muslim man living in London, I truly understand from first hand experiences & from the experiences of those close to me what it's like to be treated as a 2nd class citizen, to be judged by my race & faith, to be made to feel like a criminal subjected to "random searches " by the police, to be a victim of police brutality, systematic racism therefore I feel the need to address these injustices that I see & hear about through my music.
It's vital that I show solidarity with the African American community & use my artistic platform to do that, recently I released a video which I shot in Senegal called Black Man Strain which addresses some of these issues & will continue doing that as well as encouraging more artists to do the same.
Siendo un hombre Negro Musulmán, cual es tu opinion de Black Lives Matter y que tan importante es este momento histórico para un artista como tu?
Pienso que el movimiento de Black Lives Matter es muy significativo y trascendente, al tiempo que su existencia resalta el estado actual de nuestra condición como personas de color en el 2016.
El ser Musulmán Negro en Londres me hace comprender de primera mano la experiencia de ser tratado como un ciudadano de segunda clase, de ser juzgado por mi raza y fé, de que me hagan sentir criminalizado sujeto a inspecciones “aleatorias” por la policia, el ser víctima de su brutalidad y racismo sistémico, razón por la cual siento la obligación y necesidad de expresar estos temas en mi música.
Para mi es vital mostrar solidaridad con la comunidad Negra de los Estados Unidos, razón por la cual utilizo mi plataforma artística para ello.
Recientemente publiqué un video grabado en Senegal llamado Black Man Strain, el cual aborda algunos de estos temas y arenga a otros artistas a sumarse a este proceso.
When did you first connected with Islam? How converting to Islam redefined your understandings on life, faith, art, politics, community, etc?
I became interested in Islam around 11 years ago after traveling to Gambia. At the time I didn't know that around 95% of the population were Muslim until I went there & really had the opportunity to experience it.
I was extremely touched by the sincere brotherhood & community spirit that they shared as well as the way they practiced their Islam which was had a very Sufi approach.
Once I returned from Gambia, I continued to research about Islam and then decided to convert.
Learning & practicing Islam really help me highlight my negative characteristics as well as give me an opportunity to work on eradicating them.
It also gave me a better overstanding of my purpose in life as well as a bigger purpose of how I would use my art. It encouraged me to develop my community through building a healthy family & being a more active member in my community.
It also encouraged me to educate myself in the politricks that affects us all, both in regional & international levels.
Cual fue tu primer acercamiento al Islam? Como fue que tu conversión redefinió tu entendimiento sobre la vida, fé, arte, política, comunidad, etc?
Me interesé en el Islam hace 11 años cuando viaje a Gambia. En aquel momento no sabia que 95% de la población allí era Musulmán hasta que estuve allí y tuve la oportunidad de vivirlo. Fui sensibilizado profundamente por el espíritu comunitario sincero y la hermandad mostrada, ademas del acercamiento Sufi en la forma de interpretar el Islam.
Cuando volví a Gambia, continue con mi investigación sobre el Islam y decidí convertirme.
Aprender y practicar Islam realmente exhibió las características negativas de mi persona y me ayudó a erradicarlas, también me dio la posibilidad de entender de forma mas clara el propósito ulterior de mi producción artística, me dio coraje para construir una familia saludable y para ser un miembro activo en el mejoramiento de mi comunidad, ademas de empujarme a conocer los trucos que la política aplica a nivel regional e internacional los cuales afectan a todos por igual.
Tells us about the political climate in the UK, specially focused on the immigrant and people of color experience.
Britain voted to exit the European Union on June 23rd & the political situation since has become quite tense especially for immigrants & people of color. There's been a ridiculous rise in racial related attacks post Brexit & many people feel very unstable & scared right now.
Hate crimes in U.K. have risen by 42% in England & Wales.
The Independent stated that over 3000 incidents were recorded just between 16th & 30th June & these were targeted mostly at people of color & immigrant families.
Now more than ever it's time for people to stand together against fascists & anyone trying to break our communities with fear and racism.
Háblame del clima político en el Reino Unido, especificamente en la experiencia migrante yde color
Gran Bretaña votó por salir de la Union Europea el 23 de junio y la situación política se ha tornado bastante tensa para los grupos migrantes y la gente de color. Ha habido un ascenso ridículo en el numero de atentados basados en odio racial a raíz del Brexit, se habla de un 42% mas en Inglaterra y Gales.
The Independent señala que se registraron 3000 incidentes de esta indole solo entre el 16 y el 30 de Junio.
Ahora mas que nunca debemos congregarnos y generar coaliciones entre comunidades de color para hacerle frente a la ola de fascismo que esta tratando de transgredirnos a través del miedo.
What other possibilities you see in art besides music? Are you interested in exploring other artistic ventures in the near future?
Apart from actually making music I really enjoy empowering & providing spaces for the youth to develop their artistic skills, so I've been running various educational and artistic workshops.
Since I've always attempted to create music that had an element of education I would really like to explore the idea of creating short films & documentaries.
Actually I already have 2 concrete ideas that have been in my mind for a couple of years. In the near future I definitely want to launch a spoken word poetry project along visuals as well as a Mens African print inspired Fashion brand.
Que otras posibilidades encuentras en el arte ademas de la música? Estas interesado en explorar otras venas artísticas en el futuro cercano?
Ademas de hacer música realmente disfruto de facilitar espacios para que los jóvenes desarrollen sus habilidades artísticas, por lo cual he estado dando varios talleres educativos y artísticos.
Desde siempre he intentado crear música que lleva implícito el elemento educativo y me gustaría explorar la idea de hacer proyectos documentales y cortometrajes. De hecho tengo ya dos ideas concretas que me gustaría realizar en los próximos dos años. En el futuro cercano definitivamente me gustaría lanzar un proyecto de Spoken Word acompañado de elementos visuales, ademas una marca de ropa inspirada en patrones textiles africanos.
What’s next for mohammed Yahya?
I will be releasing a solo album accompanied by a series of videos. The album is called “Black Gold" & it’s a collaborative project with Beat Thief who produced the full album. The videos were shot by CambioWasHere, a very talented film maker during our recent trip to West Africa.
In addition to that, in early 2017 myself & Sarina Leah will also be releasing our second album “Mother Tongue" which we have been working on for the last 3 years.

Estaré lanzando un album como solista acompañado de una serie de videos. El álbum se llama “Black Gold” y es un proyecto colaborativo con Beat Thief quien produce todo el disco. Los videos fueron firmados por Cambiowashere , talentoso filmmaker con quien viaje a el Oeste de Africa. Ademas de eso, al inicio de 2017, junto con Sarina Leah , lanzaremos nuestro segundo album como Native Sun, llamado “Mother Tongue” en el cual hemos estado trabajando por los últimos 3 años.
